Firstly, I would like to introduce myself to you, I am your external student, my name is Ali Alaamri. I hope while you are reading my email you be in good health and mood

Secondly, I have a question and maybe you will consider it stupid , but really it has bothered me for a longtime so I am going to ask you. My question is about the tense which I use when I describe sequence events in any play. Although these events have chronological order there are some reliable sites of English literature which use the present simple tense to describe all events. Therefore, I am confused, why do they use the present simple to describe sequence events? Which is the better tense to describe events in any play? The most important question is, if I use the present simple tense to describe events of any play in the exam, what will happen to my mark

For instance:

If I wrote this part of an essay as an answer of your question about the relationship between Sir Peter and his wife. (Please focus in the tense

Later, while Lady Teazle disappears behind the screen she hears the dialogue between her husband and Joseph ,then she knows her husband's intentions in giving her the bulk of his fortune after his death ,therefore, she becomes sure of the reality of her husband's feeling, thus, she recovers her sense and realizes that she is very happy with her husband. In addition, she hopes Sir Peter will forgive her and take her back. Indeed, Sir Peter forgives her and considers her as a victim of Joseph's seduction

Or I should write like this paragraph

Later, while Lady Teazle was disappeared behind the screen she heard the dialogue between her husband and Joseph, then she knew her husband's intentions in giving her the bulk of his fortune after his death ,therefore, she became sure of the reality of her husband's feeling, thus, she recovered her sense and realized that she is very happy with her husband. In addition, she hoped Sir Peter will forgive her and take her back. Finally, Sir Peter forgave her and considered her as a victim of Joseph's seduction

Finally, I hope my question did not make you angry
With best wishes
Your student

Thank you for your email

Your question is an excellent one! What you have seen on those reliable websites is the general rule we have to follow when we write literature essays, and that includes your answers to exam questions. We do have to stick to the simple present when we refer to events in the plot. Therefore, we should write: "Lorenzo tries to murder...",and must NOT write: "Lorenzo tried to murder

As for the reason, I do not believe that every grammatical / writing convention has a logical justification. However, if you still insist on having a reason, then I would suggest the fact that essays about literary texts are analytical and the verb tense we use to analyze is the simple present

I hope that answers your question

Good luck!
