Farmers

Farmers grow crops and raise animals. American farmers run some of the most productive farms in the world. They sell their extra produce to other countries.

Farmers decide when to plant, fertilize, harvest, and sell crops.

Farmers watch the prices for the crops they produce and try to sell at the best time. They choose what types of machinery, seeds, and animals to buy. Farmers use new technology, and they learn about new farming methods.

Farms are complex businesses. Farmers use computers to keep records. Many farmers also supervise other workers. During busy seasons, a large farm can have more than 100 workers.

Farmers use machines to plant and harvest crops. Some also use machines to feed or milk animals.

Crop farmers grow grains, fiber, fruits, and vegetables. They till soil, fertilize, plant, spray, and harvest. Then, they make sure the crops are properly packaged and stored.

Livestock, dairy, and poultry farmers feed and care for animals. They fix barns, pens, and other farm buildings. They choose which animals to breed and sell.

Horticulture farmers grow flowers, shrubs, and grass called sod. They also grow fruits and vegetables in greenhouses.

Aquaculture farmers raise fish and lfish. They take care of ponds and floating net pens. They stock, feed and care for fish.

A farmer's work can be very hard. Hours are long, often sunrise to sunset. During planting and harvesting seasons, crop farmers rarely have days off. The rest of the year, they sell their crops, fix machinery, and plan for the next year.

On livestock farms and ranches, work goes on all year. Animals, unless they are grazing, must be fed and watered every day. Dairy cows must be milked every day. Farmers also must keep their herds healthy.

Many farmers like their jobs. They like working outdoors and making a living off the land. And most farmers work for themselves. They like that independence.

But farm work can be dangerous. Farm machinery can cause serious injury. Farmers must be careful.

Computer software engineer
The impact of computers on our lives means there is a
need to develop new software. Computer software engineers apply computer science, engineering, and math to design, develop, and test software. (Computer hardware engineers design computer chips, boards, systems, modems, and printers.)

Software engineers first analyze users' needs. Then they design, construct, test, and maintain the needed software or systems. In programming, or coding, they tell a computer, line by line, how to function. They also solve any problems that arise. They must possess strong coding skills, but are more likely to develop algorithms and solve problems than write code.

Software engineers often work as part of a team that designs new hardware, software, and systems. A core team may have engineering, marketing, factory, and design people who work together until the product is done.

Computer applications software engineers design, construct, and maintain computer programs based on what people need. They can develop a program for just one person or for many people to use separately.

Computer systems software engineers construct and maintain computer programs for companies. For example, they might develop programs that do recordkeeping and payroll. They might also set up an "intranet"—an internal and secure computer network—for a company. Many software engineers work for companies that make or install new and more advanced computer systems.

Software engineers normally work in well-lighted offices or labs. Most work at least 40 hours a week. If a big project is due, they may have to work nights or weekends to meet deadlines. Like other workers who sit for hours at a computer, they are susceptible to eyestrain, back ache, and hand and wrist syndromes.

Software engineers who are employed by vendors and consulting firms spend time away from their offices to meet with customers. As networks expand, they may be able to use modems, laptops, e-mail, and the Internet to identify and fix problems from their own office.

Librarian

Librarians help people find facts. They organize information and help people find books, magazines, videos, websites, and other information.

Librarians decide which books, magazines, movies, and computer equipment to buy. They arrange books and other items so that people can find them. Many librarians work in teams to get the job done.

Some librarians work in one subject such as art. Others work with children, reading to them and teaching them about books and research. Librarians work in schools and public libraries. They also work in hospitals, businesses, and other places where people need to find information quickly.

Today, most libraries have computers. Some librarians develop databases and websites. They also help people use the computer to find what they need.

Many librarians are also managers. They make budgets and keep records. They also supervise other people who work at the library.

Librarians spend a lot of time at desks or at the computer. They spend time helping people. Many librarians like this part of the job best.

Librarians can work part time or full time. Some librarians work weekends or evenings. School librarians work when schools are open. They are off during school vacations.
