في العشرينات قوبلت مسرحية «الامبراطور جونز» (1921) The Emperor Jones بحماسةٍ كبيرةٍ، ثم عرضت في برودوي أكثر من مئتي مرة وحولت إلى أوبرا عام 1933. وقصة هذه المسرحية هي مأساة زنجي يجعل من نفسه امبراطوراً عن طريق الخداع واستخدامالخرافات. ويدفع استغلال الامبراطور لمواطني جزيرته إلى الثورة. وعندما يهربالامبراطور نحو الغابة يضلّ طريقه ويعود إلى نقطة البداية حيث يقتله الثوار. ويقعالجزء الأول والثاني والثامن من المسرحية وقت النهار الذي يرمز في المسرحية إلىالواقع. أما الأجزاء الأخرى فمكانها الغابة ووقتها الليل، وتجمع واقعية الغابة إلىخيال جونز وضوء القمر الذي يجعل كل المناظر تنبع من ذاكرة جونز الحقيقية والعرقية. وتنجح المسرحية في مزجها واقعية النهار بخيال الليل. فجونز يهرب عن طريق الغابة نحوموته ويعود عن طريق غابة عقله إلى ماضيه وإلى الذاكرة الجماعية للعنصر البشري. ويتحول شبح إله التمساح الذي يقتله جونز إلى رمز للشر الشخصي والجماعي. وتظهر هذهالعودة نحو الذاكرة الجماعية تأثير كتب كارل يونغ[ر] K.Jung التي تبحث علم نفسالعقل شبه الواعي. ويربط الجانب النفسي بالجانب الواقعي عنصران: أولهما صوت الطبلالذي يبدأ في المشهد الأول ليجاري ضربات القلب، الذي يزداد سرعة ولايتوقف حتى إطلاقالرصاصة التي تقتل الامبراطور. وثانيهما الطلقات الست من مسدس الامبراطور التي تقسمالمسرحية إلى مشاهد وتذكرنا بالعنف والكراهية في ماضي جونز.
