لأن لو نلاحظ لما ننطقهم حرف الــ b وحرف t تصير متشابهه في النطق و هالشي يخلينا ننطقها كأنها حرف واحد ,,

غير كذا أعتقد اذا كان حرفين ساكنين ورى بعض ما ينطق الحرف الاول

مثل كلمة know

ماني متعمقه كثير بهالموضوع عشان يكون أبسط على الطلاب ولو احد عنده تعليق على المعلومة اللي عندي يصحح لي !!

What is a silent letter?

"Silent letters" are letters found in the spelling of some words in a language ( like English and French ) , but these letters are not pronounced.

Examples:

• The letter "k" is not pronounced in these words:

knee

kneel
knight
knot

• The letter "h" is not pronounced in:

whale

what
white
why

• The letters in bold in the following words are silent letters:

listen

chalk
talk
walk

Which letters are silent letters?

There are no individual silent letters, they only become silent when they form part of a word, such as the letter 'p' in Psychotic and the letter 'u' in colour.

Can the letter 'i' be a silent letter?

Yes. In English words ending in -tion, the i is not pronounced except as a palatalization of the t, giving it an sh sound.



The Role of Silent Letters


There are two uses for silent letters in English. One is to indicate the pronunciation of other letters. For example, in the word "tinny," the second n is silent; its purpose is to show that the i is not pronounced like the i in "tiny." Likewise, a silent e makes "hate" sound different from "hat."
The other use is something of an historical accident. As relics of past pronunciation, silent letters often contain clues to the history of the words they are in. Thus we can tell, just by looking at it, that the word "knight, with three silent letters, is probably connected to the German word Knecht, (which has no silent letters).

Attempts to "reform" English spelling are always dismal failures. For one thing, let's say we wanted to spell all our words the way they are pronounced. Well, pronounced where? In Boston we would write cod for what they spell card in Pittsburgh, and cawd for what they spell cod. -----

Hah! Good question.
The English Language in particular is full of silent letters. This is because English is a developing language, that has always stolen words from other languages. Local pronunciation then often changes the way a word is said. This has been the case ever since England was settled almost simultaneously by the Angles, the Juts, the Saxons, the Danes and the Vikings. These people then had to communicate with the original peoples of Britain, such as the Britons, the Picts and the Celts. Tied into this was the remains of Latin (brought by the Romans, and kept alive by the Church). Then, in 1066, Norman French was introduced into the equation. If you had to try and speak all those languages, odds are you'd mispronounce words as well.
Ultimately there is no real PURPOSE to silent letters, but what is important is that people understand you. It's not "wrong" to use text-message abreviations such as "how r u?" as long as those you are trying to communicate with can understand you.
As an interesting aside, Esperanto was invented as a language, designed to be easy for ANYONE to learn. It was hoped that this would lead to the whole world speaking one language. However, it never took off outside academic circles.

I'm no lover of all those odd spellings and silent letters, and over time many of them will work their way out of English. It should be mentioned, though, that English spelling has indeed been revised; a quick glance at The Canterbury Tales (original) should put an end to that. It was revised here in the states as well, as recently as Noah Webster, I believe. There is a purpose to many of the odd spellings, though, even if it is a purpose we can dispense with. The spellings often help us determine the origins and the meanings of the component parts of words.

Why do we use "silent" letters in words ?

Old English was 90% phonemic (words sound the same as they look). But from the beginning of the 15th century, we began to borrow words from other languages. Because grammar and usage rules are different in other languages, adopted words did not follow the rules of English pronunciation.

The English language "borrowed" the Latin alphabet, and so we only have 26 letters to represent around 41 different significant sounds. This means that we must attempt to use combinations of letters to represent sounds.

In the Middle English Period William Caxton brought the printing press to England. As time passed, pronunciation continued to change, but the printing press preserved the old spelling. That's why today we have words that end in a silent "e" or have other silent letters in the middle, such as "might." In fact, modern day English is only 40% phonemic.

Why do we have silent letters?

English can be a pretty tricky language sometimes. You might look at the word whistle and think, “What happened to that T and that H?” We don’t pronounce them. They are silent letters.

Nearly every letter in the alphabet can be silent. There are hundreds of rules to help figure out how to spell and read words, but they do not work all the time. Often it can be very confusing. Most times, we just have to memorize the tricky spellings.

Silent letters show up because English has a lot of influences. About a third of the world uses English. It takes words and spellings from many different languages. A lot of times, when there is a silent H at the begging of a word, it comes from a rule in French language pronunciation. That’s why hour sounds like our.

Silent Ks come from Old English, which was spoken in England before 1100 CE. They actually used to be pronounced, but over hundreds of years, the sound was dropped, leaving us with the words knife and knight, where we don’t pronounce the first letters.

Sometimes silent letters are used to give us a clue how to pronounce things. If there is an E at the end of a word, it is often silent, but it usually lets us know a vowel that comes before it will have a “long” sound. This is why haze sounds like hays and not has.

If you’re confused by all these silent letters, don’t worry. Many grown-ups find them confusing too! The more you read and practice spelling, the better you’ll be able to figure out how these silent letters work!
