Do you believe that what you do in your life really makes a difference in the world as a whole? If it does not, what is going to change about your life? In “The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls”, Henry Longfellow uses repetition, extremely deive imagery, and symbolism to illustrate to the reader that the importance of people on this world is greatly exaggerated.
Longfellow repeats the line “The tide rises, the tide falls” four times within his poem. He does this so his idea of life continuing after one’s death is reiterated again and again. This raises the question of whether or not humans are truly the most important beings on this planet. Nature has been around much longer than us, and although people will enter this world and leave their mark upon it, nature will eventually wash it away. This is shown by Longfellow’s extensive use of imagery.
In his poem “The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls, Longfellow uses vivid imagery to further his views of life after death. In the second stanza, Longfellow opens by saying “Darkness settles on roofs and walls”. Then, he expresses the idea of nature washing away the mark of man in lines 8-9 when the speaker of the poem states “The little waves, with their soft, white hands, Efface the footprints in the sands”. Then, the first line of the third stanza opens with “The morning breaks”. In this section, darkness fell upon the speaker, and he watched as the waves washed away the footprints of the traveler in the sand. Then, morning breaks, which implies that life will continue after the death of a person. Another example of imagery in this poem is when he says “The twilight darkens, the curlew calls”. This does nothing more than to give the reader an even more exact image of what is going on, which allows the reader to be able to connect better with the speaker.
The main symbol used in this poem is the footprints, which symbolize life. When the traveler walks along the beach, the record of his movements are shown by the footprints in the sand. Later that night, the tide rises and washes away the footprints, therefore washing away the record of the traveler’s actions. All of this connects back to the main theme of the poem, which is that, contrary to many people’s beliefs, people play a minor role in the world.
This poem is very interesting and thought provoking because of the many literary devices Longfellow utilizes. In Henry Longfellow’s “The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls,” repetition, imagery, and symbolism are used to express the idea that the significance of people on this world is overstated to a great extent
