Cont….
A Passage To India

Adela Quested has come out from England in the company of Mrs. Moore, to Chandrapore. Her main motive is to see Ronny Heaslop, a government official and Mrs. Moore's son by her first marriage: she will move, it seems, smoothly towards engagement and marriage. But she wishes, too, to see the "real India", to mingle with Indians socially, freely. At the house of Fielding, Principal of the Government College, she meets Dr. Aziz. Between the Muslim doctor and the Englishman, friendship is, precariously, beginning to grow. Aziz, impulsively, invites them - Adela, Mrs. Moore, and Fielding - to visit him at his home; but eventually withdraws this in favour of an outing to the Marabar Caves.
Misfortune dogs the first stages of the outing; and Mrs. Moore, between whom and Aziz an instinctive bond of sympathy has been sealed following their inititial meeting in the mosque, is drained of vitality by her first experience of the caves, with their hollow, eching 'boum' 'boum'. She draws aside from further exploration and rests. Adela suffers, it seems, some kind of hallucination (though everything is blurred), and leaves in distress.
The English community eagerly seizes on her confused accusations and she becomes convinced that Aziz has assaulted her sexually. Both Indians and English withdraw to rigidly defined racial positions. Fielding stands by Dr. Aziz, convinced of his innocence. Ronny persuades Mrs. Moore, now querlous, detached, apparently lacking in sympathy with Adela, to go back to England. Aziz is brought to trial. At the critical moment in the prosecution's case, Adela withdraws her accusation. In the confusion that follows, Adela seeks sanctuary in the Government College. Her engagement to Ronny is broken. She had failed him and her country, and she departs for England. Fielding follows soon, on official business.

Answer the following questions:
Find out the meaning of all the difficult words in the above passage?
Only you who can answer this question.

T or F and if F, why false: Mrs. Moore has been married only once in her lifetime?
F, she has been married twice in her lifetime and Ronny is her son by her from the first marriage.

Mrs. Moore first meets Aziz in the hospital? T or F and if F, where?
F, he first meets him in the mosque.

The first meeting between Mrs. Moore and Aziz shows that there is no way for an Englishwoman and an Indian to communicate with each other? T or F and if F, why false?
F, the meeting proves that they can build good relation, and she was very sympathetic to the Indian cause, and she listened to his grievances.

Aziz first invites the English group to the Marabar Caves? T or F?
F, he first invites them to his home?

What does the incident where Aziz change his mind with respect to the place of the invitation tell us about Aziz?
He was ashamed of his home which was dirty and not in a clean condition, and that tell us that Aziz is impulsive.

What does "this" in the following sentence refer to: but eventually withdraws this in favor of an outing?
It refers to giving preferences to a picnic to the Caves instead.

How many times does Mrs. Moore explore or visit the Caves?
Only once.

What are Adela's main motives for coming to India?
1. To see Ronny Heaslop and marry him.
2. She also wishes to see real India and mingle with them socially.

Eventually Adela is engaged to Ronny? T or F ?
F, she didn't engage to him.

What is the main cause behind the breakup of engagement?
The main reason behind the breakup of the engagement is the disappointment of Ronny with Adela's acquittal of Aziz.

Why does Fielding stand by Aziz's side?
Because he is persuaded that Aziz is innocent, and his attitude which is obvious against racism.

Where does Adel reside following the trail scene?
She resides in the Government College.

Why did Adela withdraw her accusation?
At the trail, Adela realizes that she has made a mistake, and he withdrew the accusation?

Aziz has assaulted Adela sexually? T or F ?
F .

Everything went well and smooth as far as the plans for the outing to the Marabar Caves were concerned? T or F ?
F .

Who is the protagonist of the novel?
Dr. Aziz .

Is it very important for Indians to have gatherings? Why ?
Yes, it is. Because gatherings allow them to strengthen their social ties, and stand united against the colonizer.

When the novel begins, at Hamidullah's home, what do the Indian friends discuss?
They discuss the most important question in the whole novel which is whether it's possible or not for the English and Indians to be friends?

What does the novel attempt to clarify?
It attempts to answer if it's possible for the English and Indians to be friends.

What does Hamidullah answer this question?
He says that it's possible for the British and Indians to be friends in England, and he bases his point on his experience when he was a student in U of Cambridge, and he gives examples to prove that point.

What does Mahmod Ali answer the same question?
Mahmoud Ali is a lawyer in India who bases his answer on his experience in India, where he sees with his naked eyes how the British mistreat the Indians. Hence there is no way for the British and Indians to be friends.

What do you understand from the first part of the novel, particularly by its end?
I see that there was a note of hope established that it's possible for English and Indians to be friends.

have a good study time
