- Coherence

A paragraph is one unit about one single topic. Two important points have to be kept in mind when writing a paragraph. First, all information in the paragraph should be relevant to the main idea. Second, all sentences must be arranged in a coherent way.

Keep in mind that:

• A good paragraph shouldfollow logically. Sentences must follow well with each other.
• Sentences must have a reasonable order.
• Do not write irrelevant information. Only include information that is related to its main idea

- Unity

Writing a clear and coherent paragraph is your first step towards writing a good essay. A paragraph is made of sentences and words. Your choice of words in sentences will greatly affect the quality of your writing.
In this unit we will go over the building blocks of an essay which are: Words, Sentences, and Paragraphs


Writing well structured sentences is imperative for good writing. Writing is meant to be read but sentences that are poorly structured are hard to read. This is why you have to make sure that your sentences are clear and grammatically correct.

-Fragmentsare incomplete sentences that do not have a subject or a verb, or details connected to sentences but separated with punctuation marks.

- Run-onsare more than one sentence combined together without punctuation marks to separate them
