What is it used for?
- Compare two points.
Examples:
- Vacation in mountains or on beach.
- Cat pet or Dog pet
- Fresh food or canned food.
- Homemade food or fast food.
Hook + Connect: 1 or 2 sentences + thesis sentence.
A. Hook:

- How to write a hook:
Begin with a sentence that will catch the reader's interest.
This might be a question, a reason people find the topic interesting or important, or something
the two subjects have in common.
A quote, personal story or appropriate joke can be a few ideas for the first sentence.
B. Connect: 1 or 2 sentences:
- Connect the opening sentence with the two subjects that you will be comparing in your essay.
Use a smooth transition from the first sentence to give a brief overview of what you’ll be
discussing in your essay.
- The reader must understand which points you will be examining and which points you will not
be examining within the comparison.
C. Thesis statement:
At the end of the introduction, declare your preference or describe the significance of the two
subjects. Declare the point you will discuss.
Examples:
Fresh food and canned food
HOOK (Eating is an activity that we as humans do at least two times a day).
Connection (We live in a world where the variety of food is immense, and we are responsible for
what we eat. We decide what we are about to eat and how it will affect our bodies.
Thesis (The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the differences between eating fresh
foods instead of canned foods. The three main differences are flavor, health benefits, and cost.)
Mountain vacation and beach vacation
HOOK (People are always looking forward to their vacation period.)
Connection (There are many options where to choose. I think that the two most common places
people choose for taking a vacation are the beach and the mountain. Both places offer a variety
of fun activities. The beach offers activities that the mountain cannot offer and vice versa.)
Thesis (The mountain and the beach are totally different. The purpose of this essay is to contrast
the climate, types of activities and locations of beaches and mountains.)
Cat pet or Dog pet
Hook (Many people like to keep pets.)
Connection (These pets differ from person to person. The two common pets are cats and dogs.)
Thesis (Cats and dogs have similarities and differences. Both pets are friendly, attractive and safe
to keep. They, however, are different in cleanness, convenience and noise.)
