Imitative theory holds\ believes that art is an imitation of something.
The expressive theory holds that the artist is not essentially an imitator but one who expresses his feeling. Or we can say expressive theory that the artist is not an imitation but a man who expresses his feelings.
The differentiate between the imitative and expressive theory:
In imitative theory:
1. Imitative instinct innate in humans, coupled with rhythm, harmony & pattern, it forms art. The imitative instinct is not the artist’s private possession. the art is a close copy of nature and it reflects a special view of reality.
2. It is not 100% imitation but a “re-creation” or “re-presentation”.
In expressive theory:
1. The artist does not imitate the external world, but expresses the world within him.
2. The sincerity of the emotion being expressed is indicative of the trueness of the work.
