Connaître – Savoir

French has two verbs which can be translated by the English verb "to know":
savoir and connaître. This can be confusing to English speakers, but in fact there are distinct differences in meaning and usage for the two verbs.

Savoir has 3 possible meanings:

je sais – tu sais – il sait – nous savons – vous savez –ils savent

1) to know a fact

Je sais [ qu'il l'a fait].
I know he did it.
Je sais [ comment il s'appelle]

Savoir is often followed by a subordinate clause.

Je sais où il est.
I know where he is.

2) to know by heart

Je sais cette nouvelle (par cœur).
I know this short story (by heart).

3) to know how to do something (note that the word "how" is not translated into French)

Je sais danser - je sais chanter -
I know how to dance

Je ne sais pas nager.
I don't know how to swim.









Connaître

Je connais – tu connais – il connaît – nous connaissons – vous connaissez – ils connaissent



Connaître has two meanings:

1) to know a person

Je connais Nicolas Legrand.
I know Nicolas Legrand.

2) to be familiar with a person or thing

Je connais bien l'Italie.
I know / am familiar with Italy.



Connaître always needs a direct object



Je connais ses chansons.
I am familiar with his songs.

Je connais bien ton père.
I know your father well.

Nous connaissons Paris.
We know/are familiar with Paris.

Complétez avec savoir ou connaître.
1. Vous connaissez l'Angleterre ?

2. Vous savez danser le tango?
- Non, je ne sais pas, mais je sais danser le rock.

3. Tu connais les chansons de Jacques Brel?

4. Tu connais l'amie de Rémi ?
- Oui, je sais comment elle s'appelle.
