A phoneme is the smallest meaning-distinguishing sound in
a language.
An allophone is a variant of the same phoneme.
A minimal pair is two or more words which are identical in
form except for a contrast in o¬ne phoneme in the same position
in each word - e.g, 'bad' and 'mad' are a minimal pair.
Phonotactics is the permitted arrangement of sounds in
a language.
Assimilation is the process whereby a feature of o¬ne sound
becomes part of another during speech production.
Elision is the process of omitting a sound segment in the
pronunciation of a word - e.g., omitting [d] in "friendship."
