What are the five unique properties of human language that distinguish it from animal communication?
- Human language is not only a vocal system of communication. It can be expressed in writing which is not limited in time and place.
- Each language is both arbitrary and systematic. No two languages behave in exactly the same way. Each one has its own system of rules. No one language is more 'natural' or more 'appropriate' than the other. Similar ideas are expressible in all languages in similar ways.
- There are no primitive or inferior languages. People have the ability to use their languages. All languages appear to be equally complex and are absolutely adequate to the needs of their users.
- Nothing in the animal kingdom even approximates to human language for flexibility, complexity, precision, productivity and sheer quantity. Humans have learnt to make infinite use of finite means.
