Draw Lewis resonance structures for the formate ion , (carbon is the central atom)

Solution:

a) sum of valence electrons = 1 + 4 + 6×2 + 1 = 18

(b) total electrons required for filled valence l = (3 × 8) + 2 = 26

(c) number of shared electrons = 26 – 18 = 8

(d) number of covalent bonds = = 4

(e) number of free electrons = 18 – 8 = 10

number of bonds reveals that this ion has two resonance structures (the hydrogen atom can bond only to one atom with one bond)
