What is the Y grade?
The Y grade is a grade specifically designed to designate Work in Progress for courses that are intended to continue over more than one semester. The Y grade was introduced so that students would not receive an Incomplete on their transcript. The Incomplete grade would be misleading in these cases because the student is not required to complete the work during the semester when the grade is assigned.
What classes use the Y grade?
The Y grade is only given for certain classes: For the 495 and 496 Thesis courses in honors and across the disciplines, and for the off-campus preparation courses in honors and across the disciplines.
When must the work be completed for the Y grade?
The Y grade allows two years for completion of the work. After that point, if the work is not yet completed, the student must show evidence of working on the project, and have an adequate reason for the delay. The student may then get an extension with the permission of the Honors Advisor and the Honors Director.
