Does even the thought of driving across a bridge cause your heart rate to increase and your body to quiver? You are not crazy and you're not alone . . .more people deal with this fear than you probably think. Here are some tips to get you past your fear and keep you calm, cool and collected as you drive across bridges.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
- Step 1
Get rid of those jitters. As you approach the bridge, take a few slow, deep breaths and clear your head. Let only positive thoughts enter your mind. If you are a person of faith, pray for relaxation, peace of mind and confidence to get you through. Praying and/or talking out loud can help. Tell yourself you know you can do this. This is just like every other road you drive on every day. There is absolutely nothing to be afraid of.
- Step 2
Distract your mind. Sing a song, play music or listen to an interesting talk show on the radio, recite your grocery list, give yourself math problems to solve . . . there are lots of ways to distract your brain from the fear and concentrate on other things. If you can make yourself laugh - all the better. If you're able to laugh (a real laugh - not a nervous laugh), you're relaxed and can make it the rest of the way without your nerves getting the better of you.
- Step 3
Tell someone about your fear. As embarrassed as you may be, a good friend or significant other will be understanding and supportive. It helps to admit your fear and to have someone keep you accountable for overcoming it. This person may even be willing to go on "practice drives" with you across bridges to help keep you calm and talk with you through it. If they can't be there in person, they probably won't mind you calling them (using your hands-free cell phone device, of course) If you need someone to talk to through your drive across the bridge.
Tips & Warnings
- Conquering your fear won't necessarily happen overnight. With regular practice though, each drive will get easier and you may even end up enjoying the drive and the view from the bridge.
- Some hospitals and clinics offer support groups and classes about overcoming fears. If you feel like you might need professional help, consult your doctor.
