The Effects of Television on Your Children
Television has a marvelous ability to entertain and to educate, and more than one generation of American children have been delighted, stimulated, and intrigued by educational shows. But how much television is too much? And what effects will all the commercials and violence have on the many children who watch each day?
Most parents are aware of the potential dangers of letting young children watch violent TV shows, but many do not realize that violence isn't the only problem. Too often both children and adults turn off their brain when they turn on the set. Young children have unique problems because they can't figure out what on TV is real and what isn't. They also can't understand the purpose of commercials.
Television is most useful and least harmful to children in small doses - not more than an hour a day for preschoolers - and when it is shared and discussed with parents. Watching television with your child will give you a lot to talk about together, and you can overcome some of the passivity and the question of what is real and what is not. By asking questions, you break the mesmerizing spell of TV and bring your child back to reality.
Employ the following steps plus your own ideas, to use television as a positive tool for your child's education.
Goal: To limit television and its negative effects on learning.
